Diamonds Ain’t This Girl’s Best Friend: Embracing Your Personal Style
“Fashion is about dressing according to what’s fashionable.
Style is more about being yourself.”
– Oscar de la Renta
I love hoop earrings.
I have loved hoop earrings for as long as I can remember, and I own some ridiculously big ones. I used to wear hoop earrings every day, and then I became a weightlifter. Hoop earrings and flying barbells do not get along. This should be obvious to anyone who values their earlobes.
For a while, I still wore my hoop earrings, and I would take them off when I trained. That got annoying, so I switched to wearing studs. Well, technically, I was always wearing studs, since I have had between 5 and 8 holes in my ears for the last 20 years. I’ve also had a navel ring for the last 20 years, and I have my nose pierced. I don’t consider myself a “piercing person,” though. I consider myself a hoop earring person.
Some might say I have too many holes in my head, but that’s a story for another day.
In any case, lately, I have primarily worn studs, and every time I wear hoops, I remember how much I miss them. If I have a style, it involves hoop earrings. If I have a style, it involves hoop earrings and glittery things and t-shirts with silly saying on them and outfits that don’t necessarily match but that work in my mind. That’s the only mind that matters, after all.
I never worry that I will walk out of the house and see someone dressed just like me.
Nick and I went to see Yamato: The Drummers of Japan tonight. It was amazing and probably the best live show I’ve ever been to. I wore hoop earrings to the show – ridiculously big $5 hoop earrings from Claire’s at the mall. Claire’s speaks my language. I’m not an expensive jewelry person. I’m a $5 hoop earring person.
I think it’s time I wore hoop earrings every day again.
I’d sleep in these, but I value my earlobes too much.
